Bangladeshi Taka Stabilises as Foreign Exchange Market Normalises

Bangladesh’s foreign exchange market has registered renewed stability, with the US dollar returning to earlier levels after experiencing upward pressure driven by compliance with International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditions. According to figures released by Bangladesh Bank and local commercial institutions on Sunday, 6 September 2026, foreign currency rates have cooled significantly following a brief period of deliberate currency adjustment.

The shift comes on the heels of a volatile spell in July when interbank dollar rates climbed from a steady baseline of 122.78 taka to a peak of 123.82 taka. That uptick reflected policy steps taken last month to satisfy IMF lending terms, which prompted authorities to gradually raise the dollar price and allow the taka to depreciate. However, adequate supply coupled with stronger policy intervention has successfully reversed those gains, bringing the interbank rate back to 122.78 taka.

Financial analysts attribute this stabilization to rigorous oversight by the central bank alongside a robust inflow of remittances sent by overseas Bangladeshi workers. This combination has effectively narrowed the historical gap between formal banking channels and the open kerb market, fostering broader equilibrium across the national economy.
