Police in Daudkandi, Cumilla, have seized drugs estimated to be worth around Tk 30 million and arrested 286 people in a series of operations conducted over the past two months.
The operations, carried out by Daudkandi Model Police Station, also resulted in the recovery of two foreign-made pistols and five rounds of ammunition, according to police.
Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Sajedul Islam confirmed the information on Sunday morning, 6 September.
Police said the largest seizure comprised 124,966 yaba tablets. Officers also recovered 727.4kg of cannabis, 1,575 bottles of Fairdil, 1,201 bottles of scarf syrup and six bottles of Botka. The total estimated market value of the seized drugs could be around Tk 30 million, although the exact value would depend on the assessment of the relevant authorities.
The arrests were made in connection with several categories of cases. Police arrested 58 people in drug-related cases, while 94 were detained under arrest warrants. Another 56 people were arrested in robbery cases, and 28 were taken into custody in connection with allegations of involvement in theft and snatching. A further 75 people were arrested in other cases.
Taken together, the figures bring the total number of arrests during the two-month period to 286.
Daudkandi is considered an important area for law enforcement because of its strategic geographical position. A section of the Dhaka–Chattogram highway runs through the area, while the Meghna and Gomti rivers also form part of its surrounding network of waterways. The combination of major road and river routes makes effective monitoring a significant part of policing in the locality.
According to the police, the recent operations were conducted as part of ongoing efforts to maintain public order and tackle drug trafficking, illegal firearms and other forms of criminal activity.
Mohammad Sajedul Islam said the police were continuing their operations under the direction of the district police authorities. He said efforts would remain focused on preventing drug-related offences as well as robbery, snatching and theft.
The seizures highlight the scale of illegal drugs being intercepted in the area over the two-month period. The recovery of firearms and ammunition alongside the drugs has also prompted continued attention to criminal activity involving weapons.
Police said enforcement operations against drugs, weapons and other crimes would continue in Daudkandi.
