Three more children have tragically died from measles symptoms across Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, highlighting an ongoing public health crisis. During the same period, health authorities identified 1,098 new patients presenting with suspected or confirmed cases of the viral infection.
Data released in a press statement by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) control room reveals a concerning trajectory. Over the last 24 hours, 1,043 individuals were logged with measles symptoms, bringing the cumulative total of symptomatic cases to 164,148 between 15 March and 6 September.
Laboratory testing confirmed 55 new cases of measles in the last 24 hours. This raises the nationwide tally of confirmed cases to 19,696 recorded during the period spanning 15 March to 6 August. The scale of the outbreak has placed significant strain on clinical infrastructure, with 144,168 individuals requiring hospital admission for measles-related symptoms since mid-March. On a positive note, healthcare facilities have successfully treated and discharged 138,772 patients to date.
The fatal toll of the disease continues to weigh heavily on vulnerable younger populations. While no confirmed measles deaths occurred in the last 24-hour window, the three recent deaths linked to severe measles symptoms raise the total fatalities under this category to 894 since 15 March. Meanwhile, the official death toll for laboratory-confirmed measles cases remains at 100 children for the same duration.
Measles is an extraordinarily contagious viral illness transmitted via respiratory droplets, posing the highest risk to unvaccinated infants and young children. Severe complications often manifest as pneumonia, encephalitis, or severe dehydration, which can prove fatal without timely clinical intervention. Health experts repeatedly emphasise that robust routine immunisation, alongside targeted supplementary vaccination drives, remains the most effective safeguard to arrest transmission and protect vulnerable communities from devastating outbreaks.
