Child Dies as Lightning Tremors Collapse Mud Wall in Mymensingh

A four-year-old girl tragically lost her life and her father was severely injured when the earthen wall of a mud house collapsed on them following a violent lightning strike in Bhaluka, Mymensingh. The fatal incident occurred on Sunday morning, 6 September, in Dhitpur village under Bhaluka Upazila amidst heavy rainfall and intense electrical storms across the region.
The deceased child has been identified as Ayesha Akter, daughter of Siddique Mia from Kaichan village in the same upazila. According to family members, Siddique Mia had arrived in Dhitpur village two days prior to visit the residence of his father-in-law, Momtaz Ali, bringing his young daughter along for the visit. On Sunday morning, as inclement weather took hold of the area with heavy downpours and frequent lightning strikes, father and daughter sought shelter inside the traditional mud-brick structure.
Police and local residents reported that repeated lightning strikes had been shaking the locality since early morning. The physical shockwaves and intense vibrations from a particularly heavy strike rattled Momtaz Ali’s dwelling, causing one of its structural earthen walls to give way without warning. The collapsing wall buried both father and daughter beneath a heavy pile of mud. Ayesha died at the scene from the impact and suffocation, whilst Siddique sustained serious injuries.
Attracted by the noise and frantic shouts for help, neighbours rushed to the scene and immediately began digging through the heavy debris. They managed to pull both victims out from under the collapsed wall, discovering that the young girl had already succumbed to her injuries. Siddique Mia was rushed to Bhaluka Upazila Health Complex, where medical personnel admitted him for emergency treatment.
Additional Superintendent of Police Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the tragic fatality and the injury to the victim’s father, stating that a police team was dispatched to the location promptly to complete statutory enquiries. He added that the bereaved family formally petitioned authorities for an exemption from a post-mortem examination. Given that no foul play was suspected and the family raised no objections, law enforcement granted permission to hand over the body for burial in accordance with official procedures.
