A teacher has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of a 10-year-old madrasa student in Narail, with the court also imposing a fine of Tk 300,000 on the accused.
The verdict was delivered on Monday afternoon by Sheikh Shamidul Islam, judge of the Narail Children’s Court. The prosecution’s lawyer, Ajibur Rahman Aziz, confirmed the ruling.
The convicted teacher has been identified as Meraj Ali, son of Aman Ullah Haque of Rudrapur Kaliabokri village in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga.
According to details presented in the case, the victim was a 10-year-old student at Rahmania Taishirul Ulum Madrasa in the Raghunathpur area of Narail municipality. On the night of 10 July 2025, Meraj allegedly called the child into his room and sexually assaulted him.
The case stated that the child was subsequently threatened and warned not to disclose what had happened. The child later told his parents about the abuse, reportedly saying that the teacher had assaulted him several times over the preceding two months.
The allegations came to light after the child spoke to his family. Following the disclosure, Meraj allegedly fled the area. Local people later detained him on 12 July.
The child’s mother subsequently filed a case with Narail Sadar Police Station. The case then proceeded through the judicial process before the Children’s Court.
During the proceedings, the prosecution sought punishment for the accused over the alleged abuse of the child. After considering the case, the court sentenced Meraj Ali to life imprisonment and imposed the additional financial penalty.
Prosecutor Ajibur Rahman Aziz said the court had ordered that the Tk 300,000 fine, once recovered, be paid to the victim’s family.
The case highlights the legal consequences surrounding sexual violence against children, particularly when allegations involve individuals entrusted with the care or education of minors. Under Bangladesh’s child protection framework, offences involving sexual abuse of children are subject to criminal prosecution, with the courts empowered to impose severe penalties depending on the nature and circumstances of the offence.
With the verdict, the trial court has reached its decision in the case. The financial compensation ordered by the court is also intended to provide support to the victim’s family following the proceedings.
