A teenage girl in Bauphal upazila of Patuakhali district was subjected to physical abuse by her grandfather and paternal cousin after she met her divorced mother. The incident has sparked widespread public outrage following the leak of a 15-second video clip depicting the assault on social media platforms.
The video surfaced online on Wednesday, quickly triggering intense condemnation across the region. Local authorities have not yet confirmed the exact date and location where the mobile phone footage was originally recorded.
According to local sources, the victim’s family resides in the Nazirpur union of Bauphal upazila. Her father works as a shop assistant in Dhaka. Following a 15-year marriage, the girl’s parents divorced approximately two months ago.
The trouble began when the young girl recently visited a restaurant in Bauphal town to meet her mother. Upon discovering the meeting, the teenager’s grandfather, Abdul Hakim, and her paternal cousin, Salam, confronted her aggressively.
The short video clip circulating online shows the girl surrounded by relatives who are seen physically assaulting her while she attempts to shield herself.
The footage has ignited indignation among community members and social media users, who have demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved. Both named suspects fled the area following the public outcry, making them unavailable for comment.
Law enforcement authorities have initiated an investigation into the matter. The Officer-in-Charge of Bauphal Police Station, Sirajul Islam, confirmed that officers have reviewed the video footage and are actively working to establish the full facts of the case, promising swift legal action against the perpetrators.
