Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman is in line for a potential debut in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), with his participation now dependent on approval from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The left-arm pacer has applied for a no-objection certificate (NOC), which would allow him to travel to Australia and take part in the prominent franchise Twenty20 competition.
BCB president Tamim Iqbal confirmed to the media that both Mustafizur and Bangladesh leg-spinner Rishad Hossain had requested NOCs from the board. Their applications have raised the prospect of two Bangladesh internationals featuring in the tournament, although neither player’s participation can be considered final until the necessary clearance is granted.
For Mustafizur, the opportunity would add another international franchise experience to his career. He has established himself as a specialist in limited-overs cricket, earning recognition for his cutters, slower deliveries and ability to disrupt batters’ timing. Those variations are particularly valuable in T20 cricket, where bowlers must adapt quickly to aggressive batting and changing match situations.
A stint in Australia would give him the chance to test those skills in a different cricketing environment. Playing alongside international teammates and facing batters with varied approaches could also offer valuable experience. However, his potential participation comes with scheduling complications that may affect his availability for domestic cricket.
Mustafizur is expected to miss a substantial part of the D3 tournament because of his commitments in the Big Bash, although he will be available for the one-day format. This limited availability appears to have reduced the level of interest among potential franchises. Seven Rings Cement eventually secured him for 7 million virtual points in the relevant selection process.
While the selection figure is relatively modest, it does not necessarily reflect the value Mustafizur could bring on the field. His experience in international cricket and ability to vary his pace could prove useful if he receives the opportunity to compete in Australia. His actual contribution, however, would depend on selection, playing conditions and the role assigned to him.
Bangladesh already have a recent example of a player making an impression in the Big Bash. Rishad represented the Hobart Hurricanes last season and delivered an impressive campaign, claiming 15 wickets in 12 matches. His performances helped the side reach the knockout stage and demonstrated his ability to compete in overseas franchise cricket.
Rishad’s progress has added to the growing experience of Bangladeshi players in international T20 leagues. Such competitions provide opportunities to work with overseas professionals, adapt to unfamiliar conditions and develop a broader understanding of the shortest format. For a leg-spinner, the challenge also involves varying pace, controlling length and finding ways to contain batters looking to attack.
Shakib Al Hasan was the first Bangladeshi cricketer to play in the Big Bash, establishing an early connection between Bangladesh cricket and the Australian competition. Rishad’s campaign with Hobart continued that association, and Mustafizur could become the latest Bangladesh international to feature in the league.
The immediate priority, however, remains the BCB’s decision on his NOC application. If approval is granted, Mustafizur will be able to proceed with plans to travel to Australia. Until then, his participation in the Big Bash remains subject to official clearance.
