Missing Businessman Found Buried in Lalbagh After Financial Dispute

Police have recovered the partially decomposed body of a 47-year-old businessman buried under soil and sand in Old Dhaka, three days after his family reported him missing. The deceased, Sheikh Wasim, locally known as Roni, was unearthed early on Friday morning from a space adjacent to an imitation jewellery factory on BC Das Street, Lalbagh. Law enforcement officers arrested his long-time friend, Mohammad Masum Chowdhury, who confessed to the murder following intensive questioning.
The victim, who resided in the Shanir Akhra neighbourhood of Jatrabari with his wife and three daughters, went missing on Tuesday afternoon, 8 September. According to his brother-in-law, Murad Hossain, Roni had visited Masum’s workshop to collect a repayment cheque for a loan of 300,000 taka extended roughly eight months prior. When Roni’s mobile phone was switched off later that afternoon, his family launched a search across various locations and visited Masum’s home. Masum’s wife initially claimed Roni had left the residence earlier that day.
Unable to locate him, the family lodged a formal missing person’s diary with the Lalbagh Police Station. Suspecting foul play, detectives brought Masum in for questioning. Under interrogation, Masum admitted that an argument over the financial dispute escalated into a physical scuffle inside his workshop, during which he struck Roni on the head, rendering him unconscious.
Following Masum’s confession, a joint team comprising officers from the Detective Branch, Criminal Investigation Department’s Crime Scene Unit, and local police launched a overnight search operation at 9 BC Das Street around 11:30 pm on Thursday. At approximately 5:30 am on Friday, investigators excavated the site, recovering Roni’s bound and gagged corpse, which had been concealed beneath eight sacks of soil and sand. The victim’s hands and legs were tied with plastic ropes, and a polythene sheet was wrapped around his face.
Deputy Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Lalbagh Division, Talebur Rahman, confirmed the arrest and noted that the victim’s body was sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. Police are investigating whether additional accomplices were involved in the killing or the subsequent burial, whilst formal legal proceedings and a murder case remain underway.
