Police retrieved the body of a lawyer from his rented flat in the capital’s Lalbagh area on Saturday morning. Investigators suspect he died two to three days before being discovered.
Officers entered the second-floor property at 10/1 Boubazar Lane 3, Shahidnagar, around 11:30 am. A neighbour living in an adjacent room raised the alarm after detecting a foul odour emanating from the residence. Upon investigating the source, the tenant found the occupant lifeless inside and alerted the authorities immediately.
The deceased was identified as Muhammad Anwar Hossain, a practising advocate at the Dhaka Judge Court. Hossain maintained a chamber at Room 214 on the first floor of the Dhaka Bar Association Annex Building. He resided alone in the Lalbagh apartment as a bachelor, whilst his family remained in his ancestral village.
A police team from Lalbagh Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after receiving the call, accompanied by the Crime Scene Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Forensic experts gathered physical evidence from the room to assist in establishing the timeline of events leading to the death.
Initial police findings suggest Hossain may have suffered a fatal stroke. Mohammad Jamil Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Lalbagh Police Station, confirmed that the body showed signs of decomposition consistent with a death occurring two or three days earlier. Officers recovered Hossain’s driving licence from the flat and are using the credential details to contact his relatives.
The incident highlights a growing concern in urban centres like Dhaka, where individuals living alone away from their extended families often lack immediate emergency assistance during sudden medical crises. Unregulated bachelor accommodation across the city frequently leaves residents isolated, delaying medical intervention or discovery when severe health events occur unexpectedly.
Police officers completed the preliminary inquest at the scene and arranged to send the body to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Law enforcement officials stated that the exact cause of death will be determined once the post-mortem report is finalized.
