A journey to mourn the loss of a relative ended in tragedy early on Saturday morning when a young homemaker was killed in a road accident in Chandpur’s Matlab Dakshin sub-district.

The victim, identified as 25-year-old Sadia Akter, was travelling in a battery-run auto-rickshaw alongside three family members to attend a relative’s funeral. The fatal incident occurred around 5:30 am on the Matlab-Gauripur road, directly in front of the Nagda Borobari area.

Local residents reported that the auto-rickshaw had briefly pulled over near Nagda Borobari when a Dhaka-bound passenger bus, operated by ‘Jainpur Paribahan’, struck the stationary vehicle from behind. The violence of the impact ejected the passengers onto the tarmac. Sadia Akter sustained severe injuries and died at the scene before medical help could arrive.

The auto-rickshaw driver and Sadia’s three relatives suffered significant injuries during the collision. Local bystanders rushed to the scene to assist, subsequently arranging transport to convey the four injured individuals to Chandpur General Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.

Confirming the incident, Sub-Inspector Delowar Hossain of Matlab Dakshin Police Station stated that law enforcement officers secured the area shortly after the crash. The victim’s body has been recovered and transferred to the Chandpur General Hospital morgue for a required post-mortem examination. Police confirmed that legal proceedings are underway, with an unnatural death case being filed in connection with the incident.

Road traffic accidents along regional highways in rural Bangladesh remain a persistent public safety issue, often driven by high vehicle speeds, overtaking on narrow highways, and light local transport sharing lanes with long-distance commercial vehicles. Investigations into whether the driver of the Jainpur Paribahan bus was speeding or negligent at the time of the collision remain ongoing.
