Dengue Escalates Across Bangladesh as Hospitalisations Exceed 1,000 in 24 Hours

Bangladesh faces a growing public health challenge as vector-borne illnesses continue to strain the healthcare system nationwide. Two more individuals have lost their lives to dengue fever over the past 24 hours, while a further 1,056 patients were admitted to hospitals across the country with severe symptoms.

Data released on Saturday by the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reveals widespread transmission across multiple divisions. Outside the capital’s municipal limits, the wider Dhaka Division recorded the highest number of new admissions with 251 cases. The Khulna Division also registered a sharp rise, reporting 199 patients in a single day.

Pressure remains persistent within the capital itself. Dhaka North City Corporation reported 108 new hospitalisations, while Dhaka South City Corporation recorded 76. Elsewhere in the country, Barishal admitted 144 patients, Chittagong division logged 103, and Rajshahi recorded 73. Regional healthcare facilities in Mymensingh, Rangpur, and Sylhet registered 48, 47, and 7 cases respectively.

With these latest figures, the overall count of hospitalised dengue patients in Bangladesh since the start of the year has reached 50,276. The national death toll now stands at 143. On a positive note, public health authorities reported that 46,699 patients have successfully recovered and been discharged from medical facilities so far this year.

Dengue outbreaks in Bangladesh traditionally peak during the monsoon and post-monsoon months, driven by stagnant water accumulation that creates ideal breeding environments for Aedes mosquitoes. Public health experts continue to urge urban authorities and local communities to step up vector-control measures, clear standing water, and seek immediate medical attention upon the onset of high fever, joint pain, or rash.
