Popular Bangladeshi singer, composer and music arranger Bappa Mazumder is set to return to the stage with a solo musical evening for his fans. Titled ‘Moonlit Melodies’, the concert will be held on 9 October at the Krishibid Institution auditorium in Dhaka, where the artist is expected to perform a selection of his widely loved songs.
The event is being organised by event management company Mavix Global. The organisation has previously arranged several music programmes, including the student-focused concert ‘Ganjowar’ at the Hatirjheel Amphitheatre, as well as other live music events.
Mazumder announced the upcoming concert on 13 September by sharing its poster on his Facebook page. In the post, he encouraged his followers to save the date, signalling his return to a dedicated solo stage. Among the songs expected to feature in the programme are popular numbers such as ‘Pori’, ‘Baji’ and ‘Din Bari Jay’, alongside other songs from his extensive repertoire.
Tickets for ‘Moonlit Melodies’ have not yet gone on sale. According to the organisers, details regarding ticket prices, purchasing procedures, the concert schedule and other arrangements will be announced shortly.
For Mazumder, solo concerts have been relatively occasional despite his long-standing presence on the live music circuit. He is the leader of the band Dalchhut and has maintained a parallel career as a solo artist. While he frequently performs with the band, his dedicated solo musical evenings have been less common.
He held a solo concert in 2022. In 2024, Karkhana Event Management and Blues Communication jointly organised ‘Odyssey’, another solo concert featuring Mazumder. During that event, he performed some of his popular songs as well as tracks from the film ‘Satta’, for which he composed music.
Another solo concert featuring Mazumder took place on 12 July last year at Yamaha Music Lounge in Tejgaon, Dhaka. More recently, on 12 July this year, a special musical evening was organised at Jatrabiriti in Banani to honour his three-decade career in music. Although it was not a solo show by Mazumder himself, eight artists from the younger generation performed his songs as a tribute to his contribution to Bangladeshi music.
Mazumder’s contribution to the country’s music scene extends well beyond singing. He has established himself as a composer and music arranger, working with a wide range of prominent performers. Artists including Fahmida Nabi, Samina Chowdhury, Nancy, Kona, Elita and Konal have recorded songs composed by him.
His work also has a significant connection with Bangladeshi cinema. Singers such as James, Momtaz, Samina Chowdhury, Partha Barua and Kona have lent their voices to songs composed by Mazumder for films.
His collaborations have also crossed generations. Last year, he joined legendary singer Runa Laila for ‘Anayase’, a ghazal-influenced song that brought together two distinctive voices from Bangladesh’s music scene.
Mazumder has continued to release new music alongside his live performances and other creative work. Most recently, on 22 August, he released ‘Gole Jawa Shomoy’, a song for which he wrote the lyrics, composed the tune and handled the musical arrangement himself.
With ‘Moonlit Melodies’, Mazumder is once again preparing to place his own repertoire at the centre of a live performance. The October concert will give audiences an opportunity to hear several of his familiar songs in a dedicated solo setting, while also marking another chapter in the career of an artist who has remained active across Bangladesh’s contemporary music landscape for more than three decades.
