A university student sustained severe injuries after being stabbed by a gang of muggers on the roof of a moving train in Dhaka’s Mohakhali area on Monday evening. The attackers fled with his personal belongings, highlighting ongoing security concerns along the capital’s railway network.

The victim, 22-year-old Hasanuzzaman Sajid, is an undergraduate civil engineering student at the Bangladesh Army University of Engineering and Technology (BAUET) in Qadirabad, Natore. According to family members, Sajid had traveled from Jamalpur to Dhaka on Sunday to visit a friend’s relative in Uttara during a university break.

The incident occurred at around 7:30 pm aboard the Jamalpur-bound Brahmaputra Express, shortly after it departed from Kamalapur Railway Station. Seeking to return to his home district, Sajid had boarded the roof of the carriage—a hazardous practice common during peak travel periods on Bangladeshi railways. As the train reached the Mohakhali stretch, a group of seven to eight criminals encircled him. The attackers repeatedly stabbed Sajid in both hands, chest, back, and left leg before stripping him of his mobile phone and a wallet containing approximately 8,500 taka.

Following the assault, local residents and Railway Police Constable Mohammad Rubel Pramanik from the Airport outpost rescued the bleeding student when the train slowed near the Airport Railway Station. Emergency personnel initially transported Sajid to Kurmitola General Hospital for primary care. However, due to the severity of his stab wounds, doctors transferred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 10:00 pm for advanced medical treatment.

Inspector Mohammad Habibur Rahman, in charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, confirmed that the student received emergency care and that the relevant railway police authorities were formally notified to initiate a criminal investigation into the gang.
