The deceased children were identified as four-year-old Maria, daughter of Manik Howlader, and Khadija, daughter of Md Abdullah, both residents of Raingemari village.

According to local accounts, the two young girls wandered off towards the nearby canal running through Raingemari village late on Monday afternoon. Unaware of the hazards, the minors entered the water to bathe. Unable to swim and caught off guard by the depth and current of the canal, both children swiftly slipped beneath the surface.

When the children failed to return home after a considerable time, anxious family members initiated a frantic search around the homestead and adjacent areas. Their search ended in heartbreak when relatives and neighbours spotted the lifeless bodies floating in the canal. Community members immediately pulled the girls from the water, but despite swift rescue efforts, both children were pronounced dead at the scene.

Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death among young children in rural and coastal Bangladesh, particularly in communities adjacent to open water bodies like canals, ponds, and rivers where adult supervision can momentarily lapse.

Upon receiving news of the fatal incident, a team from Batiaghata Police Station arrived at the location to inspect the site and complete necessary inquest formalities. Police officials confirmed that official legal procedures regarding the unnatural deaths are currently underway, whilst local community leaders have urged families residing near waterways to exercise heightened vigilance to prevent similar heartbreaks.
