Bangladesh have suffered a major setback less than twenty-four hours before their crucial Asian Games quarter-final clash against Malaysia, with top-order batter Najmul Hossain Shanto ruled out of the tournament due to a sudden illness.
The Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) confirmed the news through an official press statement, explaining that the left-handed batsman was withdrawn following comprehensive medical evaluations. The decision was reached after consultation between the Bangladesh team doctor, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) physiotherapist, and local medical specialists.
Shanto developed a severe high fever, prompting immediate medical intervention. He was rushed to a hospital in Nagoya for urgent examination and treatment, where medical staff determined that he was unfit to compete and required complete bed rest.
Commenting on the cricketer’s health, BOA Vice-President Major Imroz Ahmed (Retd) stated that Shanto’s condition rendered him unable to take the field. He confirmed that given the severity of the fever and the medical recommendations, officials decided to fly the player back to Bangladesh immediately to facilitate his recovery. Shanto is scheduled to board a home-bound flight on Tuesday.
The BCB has yet to announce whether a replacement player will be drafted into the squad at this late stage of the competition.
Bangladesh are scheduled to face Malaysia in the quarter-finals at the Korogi Sports Club in Nishini at 11:00 am Bangladesh time. The upcoming fixture marks only the second international cricket encounter between the two sides. Their previous meeting occurred during the quarter-finals of the 2023 Asian Games, where Bangladesh secured a thrilling two-run victory over Malaysia to advance in the tournament. Losing an experienced top-order batsman right before a knockout match poses a significant tactical challenge for the team management.
