A Bangladeshi national has been arrested at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, India, on charges of attempting to cause damage.

Incident Details

Date Friday, 2 August
Location Transit Terminal, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport
Accused Mohammad Ashraful, resident of Narayanganj, Bangladesh
Allegation Attempted to break glass in the transit terminal

Sequence of Events

  • Mohammad Ashraful arrived in Kolkata from Singapore on an IndiGo flight after noon on Friday.
  • He was scheduled to catch a connecting transit flight to Dhaka but did not possess an Indian visa and was therefore required to remain within the international transit zone.
  • While waiting in the international transit lounge, Ashraful suddenly attempted to break the glass wall of the terminal to exit the airport without permission.
  • Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel intervened and arrested him at the scene.
  • Ashraful sustained injuries during the incident and received first aid at the airport.

Subsequent Developments

  • When questioned about his attempt to enter Kolkata, Ashraful gave incoherent responses, raising concerns about his mental health among security officers.
  • The CISF handed him over to airport police, who then transferred him to Bidhannagar Police for further investigation.
  • The police have formally arrested him, and an inquiry into the matter is ongoing.

Airport Security Measures

The Kolkata international airport terminal features specially designed glass barricades intended to prevent international transit passengers from entering Indian territory without proper authorisation.

This incident underscores the strict security protocols at international transit zones designed to regulate passenger movement and maintain border security.
