Australian tennis ace Alex de Minaur extended his ATP winning streak to seven matches, overcoming Frances Tiafoe 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 on Sunday to book his place in the quarter-finals of the Toronto Masters.
Fresh off claiming the Washington title just a week earlier, De Minaur dived into the compressed schedule in Toronto, where the tournament began over the weekend and is set to conclude with a rare Thursday night final.
Match Summary
| Match | Result |
| Alex de Minaur (9) vs Frances Tiafoe | 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 |
De Minaur will next face the winner between Italy’s Flavio Cobolli and US fourth seed Ben Shelton for a spot in the semi-finals.
Concerns over New Schedule
The 25-year-old joined a chorus of player complaints regarding the new 12-day Masters format, which leaves little room for recovery as Cincinnati is set to begin this week, overlapping with Toronto’s final stages.
“I didn’t enjoy having so much time. The body is used to going and going during tournaments. It was almost like it switched off.”
— Alex de Minaur
Despite receiving a walkover in the third round, which gave him three days off mid-tournament, De Minaur said it disrupted his rhythm.
He acknowledged his difficulty finding momentum, needing to mentally reset before playing Tiafoe — whom he has now defeated in three of their four encounters.
De Minaur capitalised on nearly 50 unforced errors from the American, despite his own serving slump in the second and early third sets. He attributed the victory to mental fortitude and perseverance in hot, windy conditions.
“It was never going to be easy. He can switch it on at any time… I was just happy to sneak away with the win.”
This result marks De Minaur’s seventh quarter-final appearance of the season.
Rublev Advances After Davidovich Fokina Retires
Elsewhere, sixth seed Andrey Rublev, last year’s runner-up in Montreal, advanced to his 14th Masters quarter-final after Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina retired due to possible cramping.
Match Summary
| Match | Result |
| Andrey Rublev (6) vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina | 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/2), 3-0 ret. |
The match lasted over two and a half hours, with both players committing 37 unforced errors. Rublev now awaits the winner between Jiri Lehecka and second seed Taylor Fritz.
“It’s not the way I wanted to finish, but we did play for two and a half hours — I’ve had enough tennis for today.”
— Andrey Rublev
The Russian admitted to frustration during the opening set, failing to convert key chances. However, his determination in the second-set tiebreak proved crucial, especially as his opponent began to struggle physically.
“In the third set, he was already not moving.”
Rublev is aiming for another deep run after finishing runner-up in Canada last year.
