The Bangladesh Awami Swechchhasebak League staged a protest rally in Dhaka on Tuesday, 5 August, to mark what they described as the “Day of the Killing of Democracy, Students, Citizens, and Police.”
The protest began in the Moghbazar area and proceeded towards Ramna, drawing the attention of the public with slogans and speeches condemning past violence and perceived threats to democracy and public safety.
Purpose and Context of the Protest
According to the protestors, 5 August 2024 marks a day when the country’s democracy, constitutional order, and public security came under a reckless and violent assault.
Speakers at the rally referred to the events of that day as a “dark chapter in the nation’s history”, citing widespread violence, killings, arson attacks, and destruction not only in Dhaka but also across the country.
They claimed that these acts were not only criminal but also deeply anti-democratic and an affront to the constitution and civil peace.
Slogans Raised During the Rally
The protest march was marked by strong and emotionally charged slogans, including:
Slogan
“We demand justice for the murder of democracy!”
“We demand justice for the killing of police officers!”
“Stop the conspiracy to corrupt student politics!”
“Stand united against arson and violent politics!”
The Awami Swechchhasebak League’s demonstration served as a vocal denunciation of political violence and what it terms as conspiracies against democratic institutions. The organisation pledged to continue its stand against extremism, sabotage, and undemocratic manoeuvres, reaffirming loyalty to constitutional governance and civil order.
