Police Seek Discharge for Hasina in Fabricated July Uprising Case

A police investigation in Dhaka has revealed that an attempted murder case filed against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 75 others over the July Uprising was built on fabricated claims and forged medical documents. Sub-Inspector Ukyamong Rakhine of Mohammadpur Police Station submitted a final report to the court recommending the discharge of Hasina and 83 other individuals after finding no evidence that the complainant suffered any gunshot injuries.

The case was originally filed on 1 December 2024 by a young man named Nur Hossain. In his First Information Report (FIR), Hossain claimed that he had joined anti-government demonstrations on 4 August 2024 between 3:00 pm and 3:30 pm near the Mayur Villa area, adjacent to the Mohammadpur bus stand. He alleged that police officers charged at protesters with batons and opened fire, leaving him with nine gunshot wounds—six to his back, two above his left knee, and one beside his right knee. To support his narrative, he submitted emergency medical records purportedly issued by Bangladesh Medical College Hospital.

However, detailed scrutiny by investigating officers exposed fatal flaws in the complainant’s claims. Investigators verified with Bangladesh Medical College Hospital that Hossain had never been examined or treated by any doctor at the facility. Officers identified two distinct discrepancies proving that the medical certificates submitted alongside the FIR were counterfeit documents that never originated from the institution.

Official state records further undermined the complainant’s credibility, as Hossain’s name is completely absent from the government’s official list of individuals injured during the July 2024 uprising. Evaluating witness testimonies, available evidence, and surrounding circumstances, Sub-Inspector Rakhine concluded that the allegations were prima facie false and that Hossain had fabricated the entire account of his injuries solely to initiate criminal proceedings.

The final police report was formally presented on 28 October before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashraful Haque. Prosecution Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman confirmed that the magistrate reviewed the findings and ordered a notice to be issued to the complainant, setting the next hearing for 1 December. Among the 84 individuals recommended for discharge, eight had been shown as arrested in this case while already serving prison sentences for separate matters. With the investigation establishing that the case rests on fraudulent grounds, law enforcement has requested the court to formally clear all named individuals of the charges.
