Sam Konstas, the under-pressure Test opener, has been selected for Australia A’s red-ball tour of India scheduled for next month. The 19-year-old will be the only current Test player included in the squad for two four-day matches in Lucknow. Chief selector George Bailey emphasised that the experience would be “invaluable” for Konstas as he seeks to regain form.
Konstas had a dismal run during Australia’s recent senior tour of the West Indies, failing to score beyond 25 in any of his six innings. His position at the top of the Test order is increasingly precarious as Australia prepares for a crucial home Ashes series against England later this year.
Bailey remarked on the importance of giving players exposure to subcontinental conditions:
“The subcontinent provides many unique challenges and the opportunity to utilise different skills with bat and ball. We hope repeated experiences in these conditions will assist players in developing an effective method and understanding of their game for future subcontinent tours.”
A Rollercoaster Start to Konstas’ Career
Konstas burst onto the international scene during the Boxing Day Test last year, drawing headlines with a bold 60-run innings against India’s Jasprit Bumrah, filled with unorthodox and attacking shots. However, he was dropped just one Test later, only to be recalled for the West Indies series—where he again failed to impress.
