Barcelona Target Lisandro Martinez Subject to Discounted Transfer Fee

Barcelona have expressed a keen interest in signing Manchester United’s Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez ahead of the upcoming January transfer window. The Catalan giants are actively searching for an experienced central defender to bolster their backline following a series of injuries in defence. However, Barcelona have attached a strict condition to any potential deal: the English club must agree to sell the experienced defender at a significantly reduced transfer fee.

Reports indicate that Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, is closely monitoring Martinez’s current situation at Old Trafford. The Argentine international has been included on the club’s shortlist of potential central defenders for the winter window. Nevertheless, Barcelona’s severe financial constraints pose the largest obstacle to completing the transaction. Following substantial expenditure during the summer transfer window, the club lacks the financial capacity to make another high-value acquisition. Consequently, Barcelona must pursue a cost-effective agreement if they are to secure his signature.

Addressing the club’s financial situation recently, Barcelona treasurer Ferran Olive disclosed that whilst the club possesses some financial surplus, the available margin remains extremely limited. According to Olive, the club has only 3 to 4 million euros in available funds. He further clarified that to register any new player, Barcelona would first need to sell a member of their existing squad to generate the required capital.

Concurrently, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick faces growing tactical difficulties due to a wave of injuries in defence. Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen, and Javi Espart have all suffered injury setbacks early in the season, leaving the manager short of central defensive options. In light of these absences, Martinez is viewed as an ideal tactical solution—offering experience, tactical awareness, and valuable left-footed defensive capabilities.

The 28-year-old defender remains under contract with Manchester United until 30 June 2027, with the English club retaining an option to extend the agreement for an additional year. A January sale could provide Manchester United with a useful financial return, whilst offering Barcelona the opportunity to recruit an accomplished left-footed defender at an affordable price. To date, neither formal negotiations nor contractual agreements have taken place between the two clubs.

Meanwhile, Manchester United continue to endure a challenging domestic campaign, hovering uncomfortably close to the Premier League relegation zone. Martinez experienced a particularly difficult outing in their latest fixture against Chelsea, receiving two yellow cards within a four-minute spell to be sent off in a match that United ultimately lost.
