Police in Sreepur, Gazipur, have recovered the body of a 32-year-old former Chhatra League leader from a locked rented apartment. The deceased, identified as Shaheen Hossain, was discovered dead on Monday evening, 2nd November 2026, in a fourth-floor flat in the Rajendrapur area of Rajabari Union. Law enforcement officials suspect that the victim was strangled to death before the perpetrators locked the flat from the outside and fled the scene.
Shaheen was the son of Ratan Miah, hailing from Nayagaon village within Rajabari Union, where he previously served as the general secretary of the local Chhatra League unit. According to the victim’s elder brother, Azahar Hossain, Shaheen had departed from the family home five months prior and had maintained no contact with relatives since his departure.
The tragic event came to light around 12:30 PM on Monday when a friend of the victim, Alamgir Hossain, telephoned Azahar to inform him that Shaheen had been killed. Upon arriving at the residence owned by local landlord Dulal Miah, Azahar found the main entrance door padlocked from the outside. He promptly alerted the police via the national emergency service 999. Officers from Sreepur Police Station arrived at the location at approximately 8:00 PM, broke open the lock, and discovered Shaheen’s body lying on a bed inside the apartment.
Physical examination of the body revealed clear signs of severe violence. Azahar noted visible injuries on his brother’s neck, explaining that the attackers had tightly wrapped galvanised iron wire around Shaheen’s throat to strangle him. The assailants subsequently secured the door from the outside to conceal the crime and delay discovery.
Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shaheenur Alam confirmed that the flat was locked from the outside when police officers arrived. The body has been transferred to the morgue at Shahid Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for a comprehensive post-mortem examination.
Preliminary inquiries with neighbours revealed that Shaheen had been residing in the rented apartment alongside a young woman. However, she could not be located following the discovery of the crime and remains missing. Police have launched a full investigation to establish the motive behind the murder, locate the missing woman, and bring the perpetrators to justice under the law.
