Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, has claimed that two political parties, opposed to Bangladesh’s independence and created by the government, are seeking elections under the PR (Proportional Representation) system.
He made these remarks on Tuesday, 19 August, at a discussion session organised to mark the 45th anniversary of the Jatiyatabadi Volunteer Party at the Bangladesh-China Maitri International Conference Centre.
The Discussion
| Speaker | Comment / Observation |
| Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed | “Those who do not believe in democracy are constantly bringing new theories. Confusion is being created regarding the PR system.” |
| Major (Retd.) Hafiz | “Efforts are underway to portray BNP as an opposing force in reform initiatives. According to the Constitution, only those elected to the National Parliament have the exclusive right to propose amendments; no one else has that authority.” |
| Major (Retd.) Hafiz (on Jamaat-e-Islami) | “Jamaat is making strange claims. They will not allow democracy to take root in this country. They seek to establish a fundamentalist and backward-looking state system, causing suffering in people’s lives.” |
| Major (Retd.) Hafiz | “Those who have made no sacrifice for the people are attempting to disrupt the elections.” |
During the discussion, Major Hafiz emphasised that attempts to manipulate the electoral process via PR are being used by parties opposed to democracy and national progress. He warned that such measures would undermine constitutional principles and jeopardise reform efforts.
His comments highlight the BNP’s stance that genuine democratic reforms should be implemented through elected representatives, rather than being influenced by parties with anti-independence or regressive agendas.
