As Brazil prepare for the final two matches of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the squad announcement by coach Carlo Ancelotti on 25 August sparked discussions due to the absence of superstar forward Neymar Jr. Although rumours suggested his omission was injury-related, Neymar has now clarified the situation.
Squad Announcement
Despite expectations of Neymar’s inclusion, he was left out. At the time, Ancelotti cited a minor injury as the reason: “Neymar has a small injury. There’s no need to assess him; we all know his abilities. To ensure he can contribute fully to the national team, we need him in optimal condition.”
After playing a full 90 minutes for Santos against Fluminense in a goalless draw on 1 September, Neymar addressed the speculation: “There was slight swelling and discomfort in my adductor, but it wasn’t serious, as shown by the fact that I played today. However, on 24 August, against Bahia, I didn’t play. I missed a few training sessions to get rest.”
He emphasised that his omission from the Brazil squad was purely technical: “Being left out was entirely a technical decision. It had nothing to do with my physical condition. It’s the coach’s decision, and I respect it. Since I’m not in the squad now, I will support the team from the sidelines.”
