A late-night trip to Maawa with friends ended in tragedy when a young motorcyclist was killed in a road accident on the First Buriganga Bridge in Postogola, Dhaka, during the early hours of Friday. Another rider travelling on the same motorcycle sustained injuries and received treatment in hospital.
The deceased was identified as 23-year-old Humayun Kabir, an employee at a grocery shop. His friend, Sohel, 22, who was riding pillion, suffered injuries and was treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
According to their friend, Manik Hawlader, the group had travelled from Dhaka to Maawa in Munshiganj on Thursday night for a recreational outing. Several friends made the journey using one microbus and two motorcycles. During the trip, they enjoyed a meal of the area’s well-known hilsa polao before beginning their return journey to the capital shortly before dawn.
Humayun was riding one of the motorcycles, with Sohel seated behind him, when the crash occurred on the First Buriganga Bridge at Postogola. Preliminary accounts indicate that a truck or covered van struck the motorcycle from behind. The force of the collision threw both riders onto the road, leaving them seriously injured.
Friends at the scene quickly rescued the two men and transported them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Humayun could not be saved.
Mohammad Faruk, Inspector of the police outpost at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said the two victims arrived at the hospital at approximately 5:45 a.m. Following medical examinations, doctors pronounced Humayun dead. His body has since been transferred to the hospital morgue for the completion of the necessary legal procedures. Sohel was provided with primary medical treatment for his injuries.
Humayun had been living in the Kalabagan area of Dhaka while working at a neighbourhood grocery shop. His ancestral home is in Faridganj Upazila of Chandpur District. He was the son of Mizanur Rahman Patwari.
The identity of the heavy vehicle involved in the collision had not been confirmed immediately after the incident, and it was not clear whether the driver remained at the scene or fled following the crash. Police are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident, including the exact cause of the collision and whether any traffic laws were violated.
The fatal crash serves as another reminder of the risks faced by motorcyclists on Bangladesh’s highways and major bridges, particularly during the early morning hours when visibility, fatigue and high-speed traffic can combine to create dangerous driving conditions. Road safety experts have long urged stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, greater awareness among motorists and improved compliance with safe driving practices to reduce the number of preventable road fatalities across the country.
