A Waves of Shock and Apprehension Hit Keraniganj Following Seven Violent Deaths in Twelve Days

A wave of deep anxiety and fear has gripped the residents of Keraniganj Upazila in Dhaka following a disturbing series of seven fatal incidents that occurred over a span of just twelve days. Local authorities recovered six bodies from various locations across the region, while a seventh victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where attending physicians pronounced him dead on arrival. The rapid succession of these tragic events has severely heightened security concerns among the local community, prompting law enforcement agencies to launch a comprehensive special operation to restore order and public confidence.

The string of violent occurrences began in the Kholamora area under the jurisdiction of Keraniganj Model Station, where police recovered the hanging body of a forty-year-old man named Ruhul Amin. Shortly thereafter, on the morning of July 26, the body of a thirty-year-old woman named Mamtaz was discovered near the Rasulbagh Tiles Mosque in Kholamora Model Town. The grim discoveries continued on July 28, when authorities retrieved the throat-slit body of a seventeen-year-old girl named Tanjila from a sand field adjacent to Green City in Kalindi Union. Just two days later, on July 30, the body of a sixty-year-old auto-rickshaw driver named Liakat Ali was found near his residence in the Bhatarakandi area of Hazratpur Union.

The violence similarly extended into the South Keraniganj Police Station jurisdiction. On July 31, police recovered the body of a sixty-five-year-old woman named Hasina Begum from a overgrown, abandoned plot within the Jhilmil Residential Project. Later that same day, around noon, a seventeen-year-old youth named Hasan was fatally stabbed in front of a local tea stall near the Aganagar Power House following an altercation over smoking. The most recent incident occurred on the afternoon of August 1, when the body of Chan Mya Gazi, a sixty-five-year-old construction worker, was discovered in a secluded patch of woods behind an abandoned brick kiln near the Doleshwar Ad-Din Hospital.

Addressing the rising public alarm, Additional Superintendent of Police for the Keraniganj Circle, Jamilul Haq, urged residents to remain calm. He explained that preliminary investigations indicate these incidents stem from personal grudges and broader socio-familial degradation rather than organized gang violence. Providing specific updates on the cases, he noted that Ruhul Amin’s death appears to be a suicide driven by severe financial debt, though the inquiry remains ongoing. Meanwhile, key suspects have been apprehended in several murder cases: a man named Mintu was arrested for Mamtaz’s murder; Tanjila’s lover, Rana, was detained in connection with her death; and the auto-driver Liakat Ali’s own son, Faruk, was arrested for his father’s murder. Regarding Hasina Begum, authorities noted she was mentally unstable, while active operations are underway to arrest the perpetrators behind Hasan’s stabbing. Additionally, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has detained a suspect in connection with the death of construction worker Chan Mya Gazi.

In response to the public distress, Dhaka District Superintendent of Police Shamima Parvin assured citizens that strict legal action is being pursued for every single incident. She announced the launch of a targeted 15-day special police operation designed to reinforce regional safety. Furthermore, law enforcement plans to collaborate with community police, local dignitaries, and media representatives to conduct widespread public awareness campaigns aimed at fostering community vigilance and preventing further tragedies.
