A Dhaka court has rejected the bail application of popular television actor Md Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, widely known by his screen name Jaher Alvi. The actor faces charges of abetting the suicide of his wife, Afra Evnath Ikra, in a case filed with the capital’s Pallabi Police Station. On Monday, 6 July, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Shahjahan Kabir passed the order after hearing arguments from both the defence and the prosecution. Public prosecutor Harun Ur Rashid confirmed the development following the court session.
During the legal proceedings, defence counsel Sheikh Robayet Islam argued strongly for Alvi’s bail. The state counsel opposed the motion, citing the gravity of the allegations and the ongoing investigation. After hearing both sides, the judge determined that bail could not be granted at this stage. This decision follows Alvi’s recent return to judicial custody on 30 June, after completing a two-day police remand for interrogation.
The legal troubles for the television actor escalated on 18 June when he surrendered before the court, only to have his initial bail plea rejected, resulting in his immediate transfer to prison. While he was in custody, the investigating officer filed a petition on 21 June seeking a 10-day remand to question the actor further. The court subsequently authorised a two-day remand on 24 June to facilitate deeper inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death.
According to the case details, the tragic incident came to light on 28 February. Family members and the landlord discovered Ikra hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf inside their residence in the Mirpur DOHS area. She was immediately brought down and rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital, where the attending doctors pronounced her dead on arrival. Later that same night, Ikra’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan, lodged a formal complaint at the Pallabi Police Station. The case alleges that continuous domestic discord, paired with systemic mental and physical abuse inflicted by Alvi, eventually drove Ikra to take her own life.
Records indicate that Jaher Alvi and Ikra were married in 2010 and share a young son. The ongoing investigation also implicates the actor’s mother, Nasrin Sultana Shiuli, who surrendered before the court on 4 June and was subsequently granted bail. Alvi remains behind bars as law enforcement officials continue to gather evidence to present a final chargesheet to the court.
