Mother Abandons Two Daughters by Roadside in Hili Port

A heartbreaking incident unfolded at the Hili land port area in Dinajpur on Sunday, 19 July, when a distressed mother abandoned her two young daughters by the roadside before disappearing. Promising the children that she would return shortly after collecting some money, the mother failed to reappear. Noticing the distressed children, local residents promptly alerted the law enforcement authorities, who stepped in to rescue them. The sisters are currently being sheltered under safe police custody.

The incident transpired in the afternoon near the Thana Mor area, situated just in front of gate number four of the busy Hili land port. The sight of two abandoned children quickly drew a crowd of concerned onlookers and local traders, highlighting the harsh socioeconomic realities facing vulnerable families.

Moazzem超 Hossein, a local resident who first noticed the children, recounted the sequence of events. He observed the two young girls sitting on the veranda of a nearby office just before 10:00 am, weeping uncontrollably. When he approached them to investigate, the children revealed that their mother had walked away whilst carrying their infant brother. Before departing, she instructed them to wait, stating that she was going to fetch some money.

As hours passed without any sign of her return, Hossein bought the children some food. However, overwhelmed by fear and confusion, they refused to eat and kept crying for their mother. Realising the gravity of the situation, he decided to contact the police.

A team from the Hakimpur Police Station arrived swiftly at the scene, recovered the girls, and transferred them to the station for their safety and well-being. Following an initial assessment, Zakir Hossain, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hakimpur Police Station, provided preliminary details regarding the family’s background. The two sisters were identified as Jimi and Jannati.

Inquiries revealed that their father, Jibon, is a drug addict who currently resides in Dhaka, completely detached from his parental responsibilities. The family, originally hailing from the Ghoraghat upazila of Dinajpur, had been reeling under severe financial hardship. Plagued by extreme poverty and the absence of a stable income, the mother, Shahnaz Begum, appears to have made the desperate choice to leave her elder daughters behind whilst keeping her youngest child with her.

The Hakimpur Police Station authorities confirmed that the children’s grandparents are alive and currently reside in Ghoraghat. The police have initiated contact with the extended family and are completing the necessary legal protocols to safely hand over the sisters to their grandparents. Concurrently, law enforcement officials have launched a search operation to locate the mother, investigating the desperate circumstances that drove her to leave her children.
