A horrifying incident of violent mugging caught on video in Chattogram has sparked widespread alarm across the port city after footage of the attack circulated online on Saturday. The footage reveals two knife-wielding men intercepting a rickshaw in broad daylight, terrorising the passenger, and ultimately using a sharp blade to slice open his trousers to extract his belongings.
The crime took place along Satish Babu Lane, a narrow residential alley situated directly behind the Kotwali Police Station. According to the video footage, the muggers cornered the moving rickshaw, completely blocking its path. Whilst one assailant held a knife high to pin down the terrified commuter, his accomplice aggressively fumbled through the victim’s pockets searching for cash and a mobile telephone.
The victim could be heard pleading desperately for his safety, repeatedly telling the attackers, “Brother, I am giving it to you.” Despite his compliance, the frightened passenger made a slight involuntary movement, prompting one of the muggers to strike him on the left leg with the blade. Unable to retrieve the items from the tight right pocket of the victim’s trousers, the criminal then callously used his knife to cut the fabric open to grab the contents.
Neighbours watching the violent struggle from nearby multi-storey balconies began shouting at the attackers to stop them. Their sudden shouts of “Hey, hey, hit them!” rattled the muggers, who panicked and quickly abandoned the scene. The pair fled down the narrow alleyway aboard a waiting battery-powered auto-rickshaw.
Social media reports suggest the crime occurred at dawn on Saturday morning. However, local police have yet to confirm the exact time or date the recording was taken. The victim’s identity and the total value of the stolen cash and electronic devices remain unverified.
Street crime during quiet early-morning hours poses a persistent challenge for urban law enforcement in Chattogram. Secondary lanes and residential alleys often become soft targets for opportunist criminal syndicates who rely on rapid escape routes using light electric vehicles. The fact that this attack took place mere yards from a primary police station has heightened public anxiety regarding local safety.
Abu Zayed Mohammad Nazmun Noor, the Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station, confirmed that officials are aware of the viral recording. He stated that no formal complaint had been lodged by the victim yet, but police patrols throughout the neighbourhood have been significantly intensified. Law enforcement authorities are currently reviewing local surveillance footage and investigating the auto-rickshaw used in the getaway to trace the perpetrators.
