Australian Farmers Devastated by Severe Mouse Plague

Australian Farmers Devastated by Severe Mouse Plague

A devastating mouse plague has descended upon the vast agricultural regions of Australia, leaving local farmers in a state of panic and distress. The rodents are invading properties, running rampant around homes, and decimating expansive crop fields. This escalating crisis has already forced agriculturalists to incur millions of dollars in unexpected expenditures. To counter the destruction, farmers are being compelled to completely replant devoured crops or distribute sterile, poison-laced seeds immediately after sowing.

Severe Financial and Psychological Strain

Geoff Cosgrove, a 43-year-old farmer who manages a 14,000-hectare property in Mingenew, Western Australia, grows wheat, canola, lupins, and barley. According to him, the price of rodenticide is merely a fraction of the overall financial burden, as the necessity to replant crops demands substantial labour and capital. Beyond the economic wreckage, the infestation has taken a severe psychological toll on those affected. Cosgrove, who has 25 years of farming experience, noted that the current crisis is significantly worse than the notable outbreak of 2021. Describing the nightly ordeal, he stated:

“They run over your head, through the air conditioning units at night. You can hear them, and you can smell them—it is like a decaying body.”

Historical Context and Geographical Spread

The scale of this plague echoes the severe 2021 outbreak that devastated large swathes of New South Wales and Queensland, resulting in historic losses. During that period, the situation escalated to such a degree that hundreds of inmates had to be evacuated from a New South Wales prison due to internal structural damage caused by the rodents.

The current plague initialised in March, when mouse populations surged unnaturally in Western Australia, before subsequently spreading to engulf South Australia in a similar fashion.

Ideal Breeding Conditions and Field Density

Belinda Eastough, an agricultural expert and farmer operating a 5,500-hectare farm located a two-hour drive from Cosgrove’s property, confirmed that the crisis is more severe than the plague that struck Western Australia approximately five years ago. Eastough, who has farmed for nearly 40 years, produces wheat, canola, and lupins. Her wheat is exported to South-East Asia for udon noodle production and utilised domestically to manufacture biscuits, bread, and pasta.

Reflecting on the behavioural shift of the rodents compared to the 2021 crisis, she noted that while they previously infested homes, walls, handbags, and cupboards, they are now predominantly remaining in the fields due to the sheer abundance of food. Last year’s record-breaking harvests left vast quantities of grain scattered across the ground, providing an effortless food supply. Subsequent summer rainfall triggered the growth of fresh green vegetation, offering a dual diet of grain and foliage. Eastough remarked:

“It’s like they’ve got steak and salad—both. The mice were absolutely in heaven.”

Eastough estimates that there are currently between 8,000 and 10,000 mice per hectare in her canola fields. While typical plagues naturally recede once food supplies diminish, this population shows no signs of declining, a reality she describes as an ongoing “nightmare”.

Seasonal Challenges and Compounding Economic Pressures

Autumn is a critical window for grain growers as it marks the primary planting season. In her capacity as an agricultural advisor, Eastough is urging farmers to apply rodenticide immediately after sowing. Failure to do so results in mice digging up and eating the seeds overnight. A field sown by 8:00 pm can be entirely stripped of its crop rows by the following morning.

This ecological disaster coincides with severe global economic pressures. Australian farmers were already struggling with inflated operational costs, which intensified dramatically following the outbreak of the war involving Iran. Over the last two to three months, fuel prices have doubled, making the additional financial burden of baiting and replanting a severe threat to agricultural viability.

Scientific Assessments and Statistics

Steve Henry, a research expert in rodent control at Australia’s national science agency, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), provided context on the sheer density of the infestation. Officially, a presence of 800 mice per hectare constitutes a plague. However, current figures across Western and South Australia far exceed this threshold. During a recent field assessment in Western Australia, Henry observed 30 to 40 active mouse burrows within a mere 100-metre walk, indicating a density of at least 3,000 to 4,000 active burrows per hectare.

The verified data regarding the ongoing crisis is structured below:

Metric / Parameter Standard / Historical Threshold Current Plague Status (Western & South Australia)
Official Plague Threshold 800 mice per hectare 8,000 to 10,000 mice per hectare (Canola fields)
Active Burrows Negligible under normal conditions 30 to 40 burrows per 100m (3,000–4,000 per hectare)
Geographical Focus New South Wales & Queensland (2021) Western Australia & South Australia (Current)
Primary Food Drivers Standard seasonal vegetation Record surplus grain combined with summer rain growth
Compounding Costs Standard seed and baiting costs Doubled fuel prices, repeated sowing, and baiting expenses
Impacted Crops General agricultural produce Wheat, canola, lupins, and barley
