Bangladesh are set for a demanding international schedule in October, with a Test against Afghanistan in the United Arab Emirates followed by a three-nation one-day international series involving Afghanistan and Zimbabwe.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board officially announced the schedule on Tuesday, 8 September, confirming the dates for both the one-off Test and the subsequent tri-nation competition.
Bangladesh will begin their UAE assignment with the Test against Afghanistan on 9 October. The match will provide the side with an opportunity to assess their Test strengths in conditions that can present a different challenge from those normally encountered at home.
The Test will be followed by the tri-nation one-day series, with Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe competing against each other. Bangladesh’s first match in the competition is scheduled for 17 October, when they will face Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe will then take on Afghanistan on 19 October before Bangladesh return to action against Afghanistan on 21 October. The final of the tri-nation series is scheduled for 23 October, with the two leading sides from the league stage progressing to the title decider.
The short turnaround between the Test and the one-day fixtures will require Bangladesh’s players to adjust quickly between formats. The Test is scheduled for 9 October, while Bangladesh’s first one-day match comes only eight days later. Changes in playing conditions, tactics and workload management could therefore become important factors during the tour.
The UAE leg also offers Bangladesh valuable international preparation in two different formats. The Test against Afghanistan will demand patience and discipline over longer periods, while the one-day matches will require a more aggressive approach with both bat and ball.
Afghanistan have established themselves as a competitive side in international cricket, particularly in limited-overs formats, while Zimbabwe remain experienced opponents in one-day cricket. The three-team competition should therefore provide Bangladesh with a useful test of their consistency against different styles of play.
Bangladesh’s international commitments will not end with the UAE tour. After completing the tri-nation series, the team are scheduled to return home before taking on the West Indies in a two-Test series.
The October programme will consequently give Bangladesh a packed run of international cricket across both Test and one-day formats. Managing player workload, maintaining momentum and adapting quickly from one format to another will be among the key challenges facing the side.
