Bangladesh Vocalist Kona Outlines Changes to Festive Traditions

Dilshad Nahar Kona remains a well-known musical artist within the Bangladeshi entertainment landscape. Having initiated her professional career as a member of a band, she subsequently established a solo career, specialising in playback singing for mainstream cinema and television dramas. Her recent studio work includes the track “Dilam Tomay Kotha” from the feature film Malik, alongside musical numbers for the web film Tajmahal, including the song “Shohag Chand”. Her upcoming releases include several new playback recordings scheduled to debut across various films and dramas.

Contrast Between Rural Past and Urban Present

In an interview regarding her personal life and career milestones, Kona discussed her childhood memories of celebrating Eid. Although raised in Dhaka, her family spent several Eid-ul-Azha holidays in their ancestral village during her youth, whereas Eid-ul-Fitr was typically observed in the capital. Due to modern career obligations, she no longer travels to rural areas for the holidays.

During her childhood visits to the village, infrastructural limitations meant that electricity was unavailable, and television sets were scarce. Her family owned a small, battery-powered television, which her father would move into the central courtyard at approximately 3:00 pm during the three days of Eid. This action prompted the entire village to gather in the courtyard to watch scheduled films and dramas together. Kona noted that contemporary children might find it difficult to believe how a whole village could coordinate around a single television set based entirely on a broadcast schedule.

Musical Background and Family Dynamics

Kona’s training in music began during her early childhood, supported by a family tradition where she practiced with a harmonium at night. Whenever she learned a new song, her family members would assemble to listen to her progress. Although she found this constant repetition and questioning somewhat irritating as a child, she now views it as an essential foundation for her career, stating that she feels fortunate to have received such family support.

Professional Demands and Personal Sacrifices

Relating the theme of sacrifice to her daily life, Kona explained that her career prevents her from spending sufficient time with her aging parents. Her routine often requires her to leave for professional engagements immediately after breakfast, missing informal family conversations. Additionally, her role as an entertainer requires her to work during major festivals and social events, such as Pahela Baishakh, preventing her from attending gatherings with friends and family.

Furthermore, Kona observed that the nature of Eid has altered with adulthood, shifting from a period of excitement to a series of logistical responsibilities, such as purchasing festive clothing and selecting cattle. She characterized this modern routine as feeling mechanical compared to her childhood. To balance this, she currently spends her Eid days at home, cooking and hosting family members to maintain personal connections during her time away from work.
