Bangladeshi Man Dies by Suicide Following Row Over Football Final

A domestic dispute over watching the 2026 FIFA World Cup final led to a tragic conclusion in Noakhali’s Senbagh upazila, where a 27-year-old man died by suicide after a quarrel with his wife. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday at Kesharpar village, located within the Kesharpar union precinct. The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Alauddin Rayhan, a former expatriate worker who had recently returned to Bangladesh.

Rayhan was the son of Abdul Barek, an expatriate residing in Kuwait. Having spent several years working in Saudi Arabia, Rayhan returned home permanently approximately a year ago to settle down in his ancestral locality. Local residents noted that he had married 18-year-old Marjan Akter Momtaz roughly five to six months prior to the incident, and the young couple had been adjusting to their new domestic life.

The tragedy unfolded following the highly anticipated World Cup final between Argentina and Spain. On Sunday night, Rayhan had travelled to the nearby Kankirhat bazaar to watch the football match broadcast live with his friends. Because the high-stakes match extended into extra time, followed by post-match analysis and community gatherings, Rayhan did not return home until the early hours of Monday morning.

His late arrival, combined with his decision to watch the match outside the family home, sparked an intense argument with his wife. As the domestic altercation escalated, Momtaz reportedly announced her intention to leave the household and return to her paternal residence. Family members stated that Rayhan threatened to end his life as his wife walked out of the room in protest.

Taking advantage of the absence of other household members, Rayhan hanged himself from the ceiling fan in his bedroom. His wife returned to the room a short while later, only to discover his unresponsive body suspended from the ceiling. Her screams alerted the rest of the household, who immediately contacted local administrative representatives for assistance.

Ibrahim Khalil Chowdhury, a member of the local Union Parishad, stated that the family informed him of the situation at around 7:30 am. Upon arriving at the residence, he discovered Rayhan deceased and promptly alerted the local constabulary.

Responding to the emergency call, a team from the Senbagh Police Station arrived at the homestead to secure the scene. Abdur Rahim Sarker, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Senbagh Police Station, confirmed that the body had been recovered and subsequently transported to the Noakhali 250-Bed General Hospital morgue for a mandatory post-mortem examination. The police chief added that formal legal proceedings have commenced, and an unnatural death case is currently being processed while investigators review the exact timeline of the domestic dispute.
