Bangladesh’s Next General Elections Likely by December or March: CA Press Secretary

Dhaka, Feb 24 (BSS): The next parliamentary elections in Bangladesh are expected to take place either in December this year or by March 2026, according to Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy, Alam addressed queries regarding the election timeline. He emphasized that Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, along with several advisers, has frequently discussed the matter of upcoming elections.

Referring to the Chief Adviser’s earlier statements, Alam clarified that if political parties agree on minimal reforms, elections could be held as early as December 2025. However, if additional time is required for discussions and reforms, the elections may be pushed to the first half of 2026.

Weather Concerns Impacting Election Timeline

Alam further highlighted the impact of seasonal weather conditions on election planning. He noted that Bangladesh experiences the Kalbaisakhi (nor’wester) storm season beginning in April, followed by the onset of the monsoon in June. These climatic challenges make the months of April, May, and June unsuitable for holding elections. As a result, December or March next year appears to be the most feasible window for conducting the polls.

The press briefing was also attended by Chief Adviser’s Senior Assistant Press Secretary Foyez Ahammad and Assistant Press Secretary Suchismita Tithi.
