Barcelona Close In on Real Madrid’s Historic La Liga Record

Barcelona have matched their best-ever start to a La Liga season under German manager Hansi Flick, extending their winning run to eight consecutive matches with a convincing 3–0 victory over Getafe at Spotify Camp Nou.

The result marks a significant milestone for the Catalan club, who have won all eight of their opening league fixtures. Barcelona have now equalled the achievement of the 2013–14 side managed by Argentine coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino, which also began a La Liga campaign with eight successive victories.

Flick’s team have made an impressive start to the domestic season, establishing themselves among the leading contenders for the title. Their latest victory, secured after the international break, maintained their momentum and strengthened their position at the top of the league table.

Before the break, Barcelona had recorded seven consecutive wins against Elche, Athletic Club, Rayo Vallecano, Valencia, Levante, Racing Santander and Sevilla. Their success against Getafe extended that sequence to eight, underlining the consistency that has characterised their opening fixtures.

A strong start can prove valuable in a competition as demanding as La Liga, where Barcelona traditionally face intense challenges from rivals such as Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid. Collecting maximum points early in the season gives a team an opportunity to build confidence and establish an advantage in the title race. However, maintaining that level of performance over a full campaign remains a considerable test.

Barcelona now have another historic target within reach. Real Madrid hold the record for the most consecutive victories at the beginning of a La Liga season, having won their first nine matches in the 1968–69 campaign. That achievement has stood for decades and remains one of the notable benchmarks in the competition’s history.

Flick’s side could draw level with that record next weekend when they face Real Betis at the La Cartuja Stadium. Victory would give Barcelona nine consecutive league wins from the start of the season, matching Real Madrid’s long-standing achievement.

The fixture will therefore carry significance beyond the three points at stake. Barcelona have already equalled their own record for the best opening sequence, and another victory would place them alongside one of the most successful starts recorded in Spanish top-flight football.

Real Betis will provide the next test of Barcelona’s consistency as the Catalan side seek to extend their remarkable run. Flick will be keen to ensure that his players remain focused, particularly as the pressure to sustain their winning form increases with every match.

Although eight consecutive victories represent an excellent beginning, the broader challenge will be to maintain that momentum throughout the season and remain competitive in the title race. Early results can shape expectations, but the ability to deliver consistently across a long campaign ultimately determines a team’s success.

For now, Barcelona are firmly on course to make their mark on La Liga history. A win over Betis would bring Flick’s team level with Real Madrid’s record of nine consecutive victories at the start of a season, adding another significant achievement to an already impressive campaign.
