Belarus Frees Key Opposition Figures After US Sanctions Eased

Published: 14 Dec 2025, 08:18 am

Belarus has released one of its most prominent opposition figures, Viktor Babariko, alongside dozens of other political detainees, following a US-brokered understanding that included the easing of American sanctions. The respected human rights organisation Viasna confirmed the development, announcing on social media: “Viktor Babariko is free.” His release is being widely interpreted as one of the most significant political gestures by the Minsk authorities since the disputed presidential election of 2020.

Babariko had been regarded as the strongest challenger to President Alexander Lukashenko ahead of that election, before being detained and later imprisoned. The vote itself was condemned by international observers and human rights organisations as deeply flawed, triggering mass protests across the country. Those demonstrations were met with a sweeping crackdown, resulting in thousands of arrests and long prison sentences for opposition leaders, activists, journalists and civil society figures.

Viasna and international media outlets also confirmed that Maria Kolesnikova, a leading protest organiser, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski were freed under the same arrangement. According to the BBC, Belarus released a total of 123 political prisoners shortly after Washington agreed to lift certain sanctions imposed on the country. Many of those released are expected to travel to Vilnius, the capital of neighbouring Lithuania, where a large community of Belarusian exiles has formed.

The releases followed talks in Minsk between Ales Bialiatski and John Coale, the special envoy of US President Donald Trump for Belarus. Coale later suggested that further sanctions relief could follow if relations between the two countries continue to improve. “As our bilateral ties begin to normalise, additional measures may be reviewed,” he said, signalling a possible thaw after years of diplomatic isolation.

A central element of the agreement involved the United States lifting restrictions on potash, a key ingredient in fertiliser and one of Belarus’s most valuable export commodities. The sanctions had significantly affected the country’s economy, making their removal a powerful incentive for Minsk to engage.

President Lukashenko remains a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and his legitimacy continues to be rejected by the European Union, which has refused to recognise him as Belarus’s lawful leader since 2020. Nonetheless, Saturday’s developments suggest a cautious recalibration of Belarus’s relations with Western powers, driven by economic necessity and diplomatic pressure.

Maria Kolesnikova, who had been imprisoned since 2020 and reportedly spent long periods in solitary confinement, had her release confirmed by her sister, Tatiana. For families of detainees and opposition supporters, the news has brought a mixture of relief and cautious optimism, tempered by awareness that many political prisoners remain behind bars.

While the releases mark a rare opening, observers stress that meaningful political reform in Belarus remains uncertain. Still, for the first time in years, the freeing of such prominent figures has raised tentative hopes of dialogue in a country long defined by repression and resistance.
