The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially confirmed the death of Dominic Frimpong, a 20-year-old winger for the Ghana Premier League club Berekum Chelsea. Frimpong was fatally shot during an armed robbery targeting the team’s bus on Sunday. The incident occurred while the squad was returning from an away fixture, marking a somber moment for the nation’s sporting community.
The Berekum Chelsea delegation was travelling back from Samreboi, a town in the southern region of Ghana, following a competitive league match against FC Samartex. While navigating the Goaso-Bibiani road, the vehicle was intercepted by a group of armed assailants.
According to a formal statement released by Berekum Chelsea on Monday, the attackers deliberately blocked the road to halt the team’s progress. As the bus driver attempted to manoeuvre the vehicle in reverse to escape the obstruction, a group of masked individuals opened fire using various firearms, including assault rifles. In the ensuing chaos, players and technical staff were forced to abandon the vehicle and seek refuge in the surrounding vegetation to preserve their lives.
Tragically, Frimpong was struck during the gunfire and succumbed to his injuries. The GFA subsequently verified that the young winger was the sole fatality of the assault.
In a communiqué, the Ghana Football Association expressed profound distress regarding the event:
“We are deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic news of the death of Berekum Chelsea Football Club’s Dominic Frimpong. This tragic event is a massive loss not only for Berekum Chelsea but for the entirety of Ghanaian football. Dominic was a bright young talent; his dedication and passion for football were the lifeblood of our league.”
The governing body further indicated that it would seek to implement more stringent security measures for clubs during travel for domestic competitions to prevent a recurrence of such violence.
The following table provides a concise breakdown of the verified details regarding the attack:

The security of football teams on Ghanaian motorways has been a subject of concern previously. In 2023, a nearly identical incident took place involving Legon Cities FC. That team was also returning from a match against Samartex when their bus was targeted by armed criminals. Although the 2023 attack resulted in no fatalities or physical injuries, it underscored the vulnerability of sports teams travelling through specific regions. The death of Frimpong has now escalated these concerns, prompting calls for immediate intervention regarding the safety of athletes and officials.
