The ongoing 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has reached a stage where every franchise has completed four fixtures. As analysts and supporters examine the official statistics to evaluate bowling performances, a notable absence has surfaced. The official IPL website currently lists 66 bowlers who have claimed at least one wicket in the tournament so far. However, Jasprit Bumrah, India’s premier fast bowler, is conspicuously missing from this list.
The data provided by major sports platforms, including ESPN-cricinfo and Cricbuzz, confirms that Bumrah remains wicketless after four appearances this season. His most recent outing against Royal Challengers Bengaluru resulted in an 18-run defeat for Mumbai Indians, during which Bumrah again failed to dismiss a single batsman.
This current slump marks the longest wicketless streak in Jasprit Bumrah’s IPL career. The drought began during the 2025 IPL season. In the second qualifier against Punjab Kings, Bumrah conceded 40 runs without taking a wicket, a match Mumbai Indians lost by five wickets. Including that post-season fixture from last year and the four opening matches of 2026, Bumrah has now bowled five consecutive IPL matches without a breakthrough.
According to data from Cricviz, Bumrah has delivered 122 consecutive balls in the IPL without taking a wicket. In the 2026 season alone, he has bowled 15 overs (90 deliveries). This ranks him as the bowler with the highest number of deliveries without a wicket this season. Harshal Patel of Sunrisers Hyderabad follows him in this statistical category, having bowled 46 deliveries without a wicket—nearly half the tally of Bumrah.

| Overs Bowled | 15.0 | N/A |

Despite the lack of wickets, veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has cautioned against judging Bumrah solely on his wicket tally. Ashwin emphasised that Bumrah’s primary value lies in his ability to execute precise yorkers and restrict the scoring rate, particularly at high-scoring venues like the Wankhede Stadium.
Writing on social media, Ashwin stated, “The discussion regarding Bumrah not taking wickets can be detrimental to the team. His ability to hit the yorker accurately and keep the opposition under pressure for every run is far more important than chasing wickets, especially at a venue like Wankhede.”
Ashwin further observed that wicket-taking in T20 cricket often relies on the pressure built by bowling partnerships. He remarked, “When you cannot bowl consecutive overs from one end, your wicket-taking depends on the bowler at the other end. Even after many years of T20 cricket, the mentality of bowling in tandem as a defensive unit has not fully developed.”
The statistics support Ashwin’s assessment regarding Bumrah’s utility. Despite the absence of wickets, Jasprit Bumrah remains the most economical bowler for Mumbai Indians this season. He has maintained an economy rate of 8.20 per over across his 15 overs. While this is higher than his career IPL economy rate of 7.27 and his overall T20 career rate of 6.93, it remains a competitive figure within the context of high-scoring T20 matches. The data suggests that while the “premium” strike-rate performance is currently missing, his role as a restrictive force remains central to Mumbai’s defensive strategy.
