FIFA President Gianni Infantino made a brief two-hour transit stop in Dhaka while en route from Morocco to Bhutan, prompting an impromptu high-level meeting with Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) President Tabith Awal. The discussions took place at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, where a delegation led by Awal engaged the global football chief on bilateral cooperation and domestic infrastructure development.
Following the meeting, BFF President Tabith Awal confirmed that Infantino delivered a warm video message addressed to Bangladeshi football fans. Discussions focused primarily on expanding future collaboration between FIFA and the national federation. Infantino inquired about Bangladesh’s participation in the ASEAN Cup and expressed keen interest in whether the national team would participate in similar multi-nation tournaments if organised moving forward.
Awal highlighted the federation’s ambition to arrange international friendlies against European nations. He urged FIFA to make international match windows more flexible, enabling member associations from different confederations to compete against one another more frequently. The delegation also reviewed unutilised funds allocated under the FIFA Forward Programme. Awal noted that development projects are currently being prepared, adding that Infantino expressed readiness to undertake an official state visit to Bangladesh to inaugurate these facilities once progress accelerates.
Key infrastructure initiatives presented to the FIFA President included the construction of a technical centre, the installation of a hybrid pitch in Sylhet, and structural renovations—including floodlight installations—at two major stadiums. The BFF chief also briefed Infantino on green initiatives, such as transitioning stadium lighting to solar and renewable energy, as well as a grassroots policy proposal to make sports compulsory in primary schools starting from Class Four. According to Awal, the FIFA chief reacted with enthusiasm to these initiatives.
Addressing reporters, Awal clarified that political topics and the upcoming FIFA presidential election were completely absent from their dialogue. He stressed that the session remained strictly confined to sporting and developmental matters, noting that the federation will observe the nomination submissions on 18 November before defining its formal electoral stance. Expressing confidence in FIFA’s continued support, Awal stated that Bangladesh’s consistent participation in FIFA events demonstrates the deep passion of both the government and the local football governing body.
