A swift response by emergency services contained a sudden fire that broke out at a textile warehouse in the busy New Market area of Chattogram on Thursday morning. No casualties or injuries have been reported in connection with the incident.

The blaze originated at approximately 10:15 am on the second floor—designated as Block B—of the commercial complex located under the jurisdiction of the Kotwali Police Station. Dense smoke began billowing from the third-story storage room, prompting immediate panic among local shopkeepers and shoppers in one of the port city’s most congested trading hubs.

Upon receiving the alarm, the Fire Service and Civil Defence control room dispatched units to the scene. Two firefighting teams from the nearby Nandankanan Fire Station arrived promptly and managed to bring the flames under control within half an hour, completely extinguishing the fire by 10:50 am.

Masud Rana, an official on duty at the Chattogram Fire Service control room, confirmed that the timely intervention prevented the flames from spreading to adjacent retail outlets and inventory facilities within the tightly packed market structure.

While the quick containment averted a potential disaster, the exact cause of the fire and the total extent of financial losses remain unknown. Officials from the Fire Service and local police have launched an investigation to ascertain whether the incident stemmed from an electrical short circuit or other hazards common to commercial storage units.

Commercial centers across Chattogram, particularly older establishments housing large volumes of combustible materials like fabrics and clothing items, frequently face elevated fire risks due to high electrical loads and dense layouts. Local business owners have been advised to inspect their electrical systems to prevent similar occurrences.
