A quiet evening in Koyra upazila turned tragic on Wednesday night after a pedestrian lost his life in a high-speed collision with a motorcycle. The incident, which also left three motorcyclists injured, occurred around 8:00 pm at the busy Islampur Chowrasta intersection under Bagali Union.
The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Rafiqul Islam, son of the late Jamil Uddin Sana, residing in the Gopirayer Ber area adjacent to Islampur Chowrasta.
According to local sources, a group of young men were travelling on a motorcycle from the Baka area in neighbouring Paikgachha upazila. They were en route to a local tree fair (Brikkha Mela) hosted at Kachharibari in Uttor Bedkashi Union under Koyra. As the speeding vehicle approached Islampur Chowrasta, Rafiqul Islam was attempting to cross the road. The motorcycle struck him at high speed, throwing him to the ground and causing severe internal and external injuries.
Local residents rushed to the scene immediately following the impact, rescuing the critically injured pedestrian alongside the three occupants of the motorcycle. All four were transported to the Koyra Upazila Health Complex for emergency medical treatment. However, the attending duty doctor pronounced Rafiqul dead upon arrival.
The three injured motorcyclists are currently undergoing treatment at the upazila health facility. They have been identified as Md Rayhan Gazi, son of Billal Gazi from Raruli village; Antar Mondal, son of Sandip Mondal from Kathipara (Baka) village; and Md Hridoy Hossain, son of Aziz Sardar from the same locality. All three injured individuals hail from Paikgachha upazila.
Road accidents involving two-wheelers on rural links and rural-urban corridors remain a persistent concern across the region, often exacerbated by poorly lit intersections, speeding, and reckless riding.
Confirming the fatality, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Koyra Police Station, Md Rashedul Alam, stated that a police team visited and inspected the scene shortly after the crash. Law enforcement officers recovered the body, which has since been dispatched to the Khulna Medical College Hospital morgue for a formal post-mortem examination. Police are investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the collision, and legal proceedings regarding the incident are currently underway.
