A political activist associated with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was critically injured following a targeted shooting and bombing in the Gangni Upazila of Meherpur district. The violent encounter occurred in the early hours of Monday on the Saharbati-Bhatpara road, causing significant concern regarding the local security situation.
According to law enforcement officials and local residents, the victim, identified as 55-year-old Mukul Hossain, was walking from Saharbati village towards Bhatpara village at dawn. Upon reaching the Bhatpara junction, a group of unidentified miscreants launched a coordinated assault. The attackers fired several rounds at Mr Hossain, striking him in the chest, back, and hands.
As the victim collapsed from his injuries, the assailants detonated several crude bombs to facilitate their escape and deter immediate pursuit. Local residents, alerted by the sound of gunfire and explosions, rushed to the scene to find Mr Hossain in a critical condition. He was initially transported to the Gangni Upazila Health Complex, but medical staff quickly determined that his injuries required specialist intervention.
Dr Omar Faruq, a physician at the Gangni Upazila Health Complex, confirmed that the victim had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Due to the severity of his condition, he was subsequently transferred to Kushtia Medical College Hospital for advanced surgical treatment.
Mukul Hossain is the son of Nek Mohammad and a resident of Saharbati village. While he does not hold an official portfolio within the BNP hierarchy, he is recognised locally as an active supporter of the party. Local BNP leaders have identified him as a loyal follower of Asaduzzaman Bablu, the former president of the Gangni Upazila BNP. It was further noted that Mr Hossain played an active role in the previous parliamentary elections, campaigning on behalf of the former Member of Parliament, Amjad Hossain.
