The landscape of international cricket in Bangladesh expanded on Monday as the Rajshahi Divisional Stadium (also known as the Shahid AHM Kamaruzzaman Stadium) officially became the country’s 13th international cricket venue. This milestone was marked by the commencement of the first One Day International (ODI) in a three-match series between the Bangladesh and Sri Lanka women’s national teams.
In the inaugural international fixture at this venue, Sri Lanka’s captain, Chamari Athapaththu, won the toss and elected to bat first. The Sri Lankan side made a steady start, navigating the local conditions effectively. At the time of reporting, the visitors had reached a total of 149 runs for the loss of 3 wickets after 33 overs. The Bangladeshi bowlers have been working to contain the run rate on a surface that has historically favoured spin during domestic competitions.
While the Rajshahi Divisional Stadium has been a staple of the Bangladesh domestic circuit, its elevation to international status is a significant development for the northern region of the country. Previously, the ground had hosted age-group internationals and matches involving “Emerging” developmental squads. However, this series represents the first time two senior national teams have competed in a full international fixture at the site.
The current tour by the Sri Lanka women’s team is divided into two segments: a three-match ODI series followed by a three-match T20 International (T20I) series. Under the current scheduling, Rajshahi will host the entirety of the ODI leg, while the action will shift to Sylhet for the shorter format.
| Match Type | Date | Venue | Status/Result |
| 1st ODI | 20 April 2026 | Rajshahi Divisional Stadium | In Progress |
| 2nd ODI | 22 April 2026 | Rajshahi Divisional Stadium | Scheduled |
| 3rd ODI | 25 April 2026 | Rajshahi Divisional Stadium | Scheduled |
| 1st T20I | 28 April 2026 | Sylhet International Stadium | Scheduled |
| 2nd T20I | 30 April 2026 | Sylhet International Stadium | Scheduled |
| 3rd T20I | 2 May 2026 | Sylhet International Stadium | Scheduled |
This bilateral series is of paramount importance as it forms part of the ICC Women’s Championship. Points earned during these ODIs are critical for direct qualification for the next Women’s Cricket World Cup. Consequently, both teams are fielding their strongest available elevens. For Bangladesh, the debut of this venue provides a home-ground advantage in a region known for its passionate cricket following.
To meet the standards required for an international debut, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) oversaw several upgrades to the Rajshahi facility. These improvements included the modernisation of player dressing rooms, the installation of enhanced media facilities, and the refinement of the outfield. The pitch for the opening match has shown a balanced nature, offering some early assistance to seamers before settling into a rhythm conducive to middle-order batting.
Following the conclusion of the matches in Rajshahi on 25 April, both squads will travel to Sylhet. The transition to the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium will mark the final phase of the tour, where three T20Is will be played to conclude the visit. The successful hosting of the opening ODI in Rajshahi is expected to pave the way for more high-profile international fixtures in the future.
