The president of the Gopinathpur Union unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Saidul Islam, has been temporarily suspended from his party position. This administrative action follows the widespread circulation of a video on Facebook depicting Islam consuming illicit substances. In conjunction with his suspension, the existing Gopinathpur Union BNP committee has been dissolved, and a new 31-member convening committee has been established. The Akkelpur Upazila unit of the BNP announced these structural changes via an official press release on Saturday night.
According to internal party sources, the video showing the Gopinathpur Union BNP President consuming drugs surfaced on social media last Tuesday. The footage triggered extensive public discussion and criticism across the Akkelpur Upazila in the Joypurhat district. In response to the growing controversy, the Akkelpur Upazila BNP leadership served a formal show-cause notice to Islam on Tuesday evening, demanding an explanation for his conduct. Simultaneously, a five-member internal committee was constituted to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
Following the field investigation, the inquiry committee submitted its official findings to the upazila leadership on Saturday night. Based on the evidence and recommendations contained within the report, the upazila BNP enforced disciplinary measures. Islam was stripped of his presidential duties under a temporary suspension order. Furthermore, the dissolution of the Gopinathpur Union committee led to the immediate appointment of SM Kaikobad as the convenor of the newly formed 31-member interim body.
The formal suspension letter explicitly noted that Saidul Islam was removed from his post due to a severe breach of party discipline. The directive further warned that any party member choosing to engage with Islam in any future political activities would do so strictly in an individual capacity, as the party will bear no organizational responsibility for his actions.
The sequence of administrative responses and organizational overhauls is outlined in the chronological summary below:
| Sequence | Event and Disciplinary Action Taken | Documented Timeline |
| 1 | Video surfaces on Facebook; show-cause notice served | Last Tuesday |
| 2 | Five-member internal inquiry committee formed | Last Tuesday (Night) |
| 3 | Inquiry committee completes field investigation | Last Saturday (Afternoon) |
| 4 | Inquiry report submitted; Saidul Islam temporarily suspended | Last Saturday (Night) |
| 5 | Gopinathpur Union BNP committee dissolved | Last Saturday (Night) |
| 6 | New 31-member convening committee formed (Convenor: SM Kaikobad) | Last Saturday (Night) |
Responding to the developments, Saidul Islam claimed that the dissemination of the video was part of a planned conspiracy against him. He confirmed that the inquiry took place on Saturday afternoon and asserted that the majority of local attendees spoke in his favour during the proceedings. He added that he received the official notification of his suspension via his mobile phone shortly after the investigators left the area, alongside the confirmation that the union committee had been completely dismantled.
Conversely, the President of the Akkelpur Upazila BNP, Kamruzzaman Kamal, validated the procedural integrity of the disciplinary action. Kamal stated that the show-cause notice and the formation of the five-member investigation committee were mandatory steps taken to address the gravity of the social media footage. He reiterated that the decision to issue the temporary suspension and dissolve the Gopinathpur Union committee was executed only after receiving definitive conclusions from the investigation committee’s report.
