Teenage Girl Detained for Drowning Toddler in Gazipur

A 14-year-old girl has been remanded in custody following the drowning of a two-and-a-half-year-old child in a bucket of water in the Kaliganj Upazila of Gazipur district. The incident, which took place on Saturday afternoon, reportedly stemmed from resentment regarding a perceived lack of maternal affection. The suspect formally confessed to the crime during police interrogation, noting that she routinely watched the crime-based television series Crime Patrol.

On Sunday afternoon, the Kaliganj police presented the teenage suspect before the Gazipur Court, where the presiding judge ordered her to be sent to a juvenile detention facility. This legal action followed a formal murder case filed by the deceased toddler’s father at the Kaliganj Police Station on Sunday morning.

Background and Case Dynamics

The deceased child has been identified as Arisha Akter Jannat, the daughter of Alhaj Sheikh and Golapi Begum, originally from the Ramkantapur area of Rajbari district. Due to his employment at the Seven Rings Cement Factory, Alhaj Sheikh resided with his family in a rented apartment within a property owned by Abul Kalam in the Deopara area of Kaliganj municipality. The 14-year-old suspect is the landlord’s daughter and a Year 9 student at a local secondary school.

According to statements from the police and the victim’s father, the two households maintained a friendly relationship. The suspect’s mother was notably fond of young Arisha and frequently showed her affection. On Saturday afternoon, Arisha and the teenager were playing together in the courtyard while members of both families conversed inside the house.

When Arisha’s parents noticed her absence shortly afterwards, they initiated a search of the premises. They subsequently discovered the toddler submerged in a bucket of water inside the bathroom. Responding to their distress calls, other residents assisted in recovering Arisha and transported her to the Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician pronounced her dead upon arrival.

Confession and Police Findings

Following the medical confirmation of Arisha’s death, the suspect went directly to the local police station and stated, “I have drowned Arisha in a bucket of water and killed her.” Law enforcement personnel immediately took the minor into custody for detailed questioning.

Investigators have identified several contributing factors behind the incident:

  • Maternal Resentment: The suspect reportedly harboured deep resentment because her mother showed extensive affection to the victim, which she was unable to accept.

  • Media Consumption: The teenager had an active preoccupation with television programmes like Crime Patrol, which investigators believe influenced her actions.

  • Mental Health: Initial assessments indicate that the suspect is not entirely mentally sound.

The specific details regarding the individuals and legal parameters of the case are structured below:

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaliganj Police Station, Md.
