Border Guard Bangladesh Seizes 350,000 Yaba Pills in Teknaf Raid

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have intercepted a major narcotics trafficking operation in the coastal district of Cox’s Bazar, seizing 350,000 Yaba tablets and apprehending two suspected smugglers along the Myanmar frontier.

The successful early-morning operation was carried out in the Jorakathi area of Ulubuniya village under the Hwaykong Union of Teknaf Upazila. Lieutenant Colonel Zohirul Islam, Commander of the Ukhiya BGB Battalion (64 BGB), officially confirmed the seizure and arrests on Monday afternoon, 10 August.

The detained individuals have been identified as Nur Bashar, 22, son of the late Syed Alam hailing from the Katakhali Hatimara area, and Abul Fayez, 25, son of Ali Akbar from Ulubuniya village.

Border Patrol Ambush and Confiscation

Acting on targeted intelligence regarding cross-border smuggling routes, a specialized patrol team from the Palongkhali Border Outpost (BOP), operating under the jurisdiction of the 64 BGB Battalion, established a strategic surveillance post inside Bangladeshi territory at Jorakathi.

At daybreak, border guards observed two men crossing into Bangladesh from the Myanmar border, carrying heavy bags. When the patrol team challenged the suspects, both individuals attempted to flee into nearby terrain. However, BGB officers pursued and subdued them within moments.

A subsequent search of their belongings uncovered 35 blue-coloured cartons packed inside khaki-wrapped bundles. Inspection confirmed the presence of 350,000 Yaba tablets—a potent mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine widely trafficked across the border.

During preliminary interrogation on site, both suspects reportedly confessed that they had procured the illicit consignment directly from suppliers in Myanmar. They admitted to transporting the narcotics into Bangladesh with the intention of distributing them across urban wholesale markets at inflated prices.

Escalating Border Vigilance Against Drug Networks

Lieutenant Colonel Zohirul Islam emphasized that military and intelligence surveillance along the eastern border has been substantially intensified to dismantle regional trafficking rings and identify local buyers. Legal proceedings against the two arrestees are currently underway at the local police station, alongside formal handovers of the confiscated contraband.

The southeastern border district of Cox’s Bazar, particularly the Teknaf and Ukhiya belts along the Naf River, remains a high-density transit corridor for transnational drug syndicates operating out of Myanmar. Despite heightened border patrols, riverine checkpoints, and regular interdiction drives, syndicates continuously exploit the porous terrain to move massive shipments of Yaba and synthetic drugs into Bangladesh. BGB authorities reiterated their commitment to maintaining zero tolerance against narcotics trafficking to protect public safety and national security.
