A rickshaw driver was found dead in a violent incident in Meherpur following a dispute reportedly linked to damage and subsequent disagreement over a boundary wall and gate structure. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in Sheikhpara under Meherpur municipal area.
The deceased has been identified as Golam Hossain (46), son of Yasin Ali and a resident of the locality. The alleged attacker is Samirul Islam, a maternal cousin of the deceased. According to police and family accounts, the confrontation escalated from a prior disagreement involving a neighbouring property boundary.
Police and family sources stated that on 2 May, while Golam Hossain was returning home with his rickshaw, a portion of a boundary wall belonging to neighbour Banna Khatun was damaged. The incident triggered an initial altercation between the parties concerned. Golam Hossain later repaired the damaged section voluntarily. However, tensions continued regarding the installation and maintenance of a tin gate, which led to renewed disputes.
Eyewitness accounts and relatives reported that on Tuesday afternoon, while Golam Hossain was preparing to leave with his rickshaw, Banna Khatun allegedly stopped him and insisted that the gate issue be resolved. She then reportedly locked the rickshaw and contacted Samirul Islam by mobile phone, requesting his presence at the scene.
Shortly afterwards, Samirul Islam arrived carrying a machete. He reportedly engaged in an argument with Golam Hossain over the dispute. The confrontation escalated and Samirul allegedly attacked Golam Hossain repeatedly with the weapon. During the incident, Golam Hossain’s wife, Aleya Khatun, along with local residents, attempted to intervene. Following this, the accused fled the scene.
Golam Hossain was rescued in a seriously injured condition and taken to Meherpur General Hospital, where attending doctors declared him dead.
The officer-in-charge of Meherpur Sadar Police Station, Humayun Kabir, stated that the accused remains absconding and efforts are underway to apprehend him. He also confirmed that legal proceedings are being prepared and the body has been sent to the morgue for post-mortem examination.
