A 20-year-old man has died after being electrocuted while attempting to hoist a Brazilian flag in Manikganj Sadar upazila.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon (9 June) in the Bhatbaur area of Dighi Union, according to police and local residents. The deceased has been identified as Faisal Hossain, 20, son of Munnu Mia from the same locality. He was employed as a worker at the local Tasnuva Filling Station.
Police and eyewitness accounts state that Faisal Hossain, an enthusiastic supporter of the Brazilian national football team, climbed an mango tree located within the premises of the filling station shortly before evening. He was attempting to place a Brazilian flag at the top of the tree.
During the act, he inadvertently came into contact with a nearby live electricity line. The contact resulted in an immediate electric shock. Following the shock, he fell from the tree to the ground.
Local residents quickly rushed to his aid after noticing the incident. He was found in a critically injured condition and was transported to Manikganj Sadar Hospital. However, the attending doctors on duty declared him dead upon arrival.
Authorities confirmed that the incident was reported to Manikganj Sadar Police Station shortly after it occurred. Police officers visited the scene and prepared an inquest report as part of the preliminary investigation. Legal procedures related to the incident are currently underway.
The tragedy has highlighted the dangers associated with overhead electrical lines in residential and semi-commercial areas, particularly when individuals climb trees or elevated structures near power infrastructure. Such incidents have been recorded in different parts of the country in similar circumstances, often involving accidental contact with exposed or low-hanging electrical wires.
