An investigation has been launched after a brick fragment landed directly in front of a security vehicle accompanying Prime Minister Tariq Rahman during his journey to Barisal. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 am on Monday near the Sadhur Bridge bus stand area along the vital Dhaka-Barisal highway in Madaripur.
A one-minute-and-forty-nine-second video documenting the moment has circulated widely on social media platforms, capturing the tense sequence of events. In the footage, the Prime Minister’s extensive convoy is seen navigating the highway, with crowds of local citizens lining the roads to catch a glimpse of the leader. Inside the primary transport vehicle—a heavily secured bus—Prime Minister Rahman can be seen standing near the window, waving to the gathered onlookers. The video shows a piece of brick suddenly flying into the path of the third security vehicle positioned directly behind the prime ministerial bus, striking the tarmac immediately ahead of it.
Senior law enforcement officials have moved quickly to manage the fallout and determine the source of the projectile. Speaking to the press, Madaripur District Superintendent of Police, Habibur Rahman, urged calm while confirming that a full analytical inquiry is underway. Investigators are currently assessing whether the debris was deliberately hurled by miscreants or inadvertently kicked up by the heavy tyres of preceding vehicles within the motorcade. Police have emphasised that there is no immediate cause for panic, though security protocols along major national highways are being reviewed as a precautionary measure.
Prime Minister Tariq Rahman had departed the capital, Dhaka, early on Monday morning, opting for a high-profile overland journey by bus to reach Barisal for a series of official engagements. The convoy reached Gurnadi’s Batajor area just before 10:00 am, where the Prime Minister was received by local administrative heads. Following a packed itinerary of public programmes, meetings, and regional developmental reviews, the Prime Minister concluded his visit and departed Barisal by road at approximately 6:30 pm. Securing overland travel for high-level officials along the Dhaka-Barisal corridor remains an immense logistical challenge, often requiring thousands of deployed personnel to secure transport arteries and manage the dense crowds that historically gather along the route.
