BSF Soldier Killed by Lightning Strike on Indo-Bangladesh Border

A Border Security Force (BSF) soldier was killed by a lightning strike whilst patrolling the international border between India and Bangladesh in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal. The tragic incident occurred during a spell of severe weather, throwing the border guarding community into mourning.

The deceased soldier has been identified as 46-year-old Vineet Kumar Dubey, a Head Constable serving with the 71 Battalion of the BSF. A native of the Kannauj district in Uttar Pradesh, Dubey had been stationed at the Babura Ghat border outpost in Murshidabad, a sector known for its complex geographical terrain and active patrolling requirements.

On Tuesday night, the region experienced a sudden and violent shift in weather patterns, characterised by heavy downpours, high-velocity winds, and intense electrical storms. Despite the hazardous conditions, Dubey was deployed on a routine foot patrol along an unfenced and vulnerable section of the border in the Mithipur area. Whilst keeping watch under the open sky near the zero line—the definitive demarcation line between the two nations—he was struck directly by a powerful bolt of lightning. The impact left him critically injured and unconscious on the ground.

His patrolling companions acted swiftly, braving the ongoing tempest to rescue him from the spot. He was initially rushed to the nearby BSF camp for emergency first aid before being transported to the Jangipur Sub-Divisional Hospital for advanced medical attention. Doctors at the facility examined him upon arrival but pronounced him dead. Medical officials indicated that the severe electrical shock sustained from the direct strike had proved fatal prior to his arrival at the hospital.

The fatal weather system caused widespread devastation across the broader Murshidabad district on the same day. In a separate incident in the Dhuliyan area, a lightning strike hit a ferry crossing the Ganges, killing four individuals and injuring at least 15 others. Local authorities have placed emergency services on alert, and the regional meteorological department has reiterated warnings for residents and outdoor workers to seek sturdy shelter during electrical storms.
